Dear Shoe Lovers,
As many of you know, this past December, on my daughter’s birthday, I lost my beloved mother, Camille, to a rare form of uterine cancer after a brave and exhausting two-year battle. What you might not know is that she was also a 28-year breast cancer survivor, a devoted youth ministry volunteer, and a woman of deep faith who prayed for hours each day. She was fiercely honest and unapologetically herself, raised in Brooklyn as an Italian Mama, tough and fabulous in equal measure. My father, whom we lost to COVID in early 2020, was her partner in life and adventure, from evenings at Studio 54 to dining at iconic Italian restaurants frequented by old-time mobsters, and from cruises to Italy to their cherished getaways in Aruba.
One of my fondest memories is of our October walks through Central Park, alongside my college friends, wearing pink in honor of breast cancer awareness. We moved through the crisp autumn air with hope in our hearts, proud to support the cause. Over the years, I purchased countless pink products, including a pink Christmas tree, knowing a portion of the proceeds would help fund research and support survivors like my mom.
Not a day goes by that I don’t think of her, replaying memories from the 38 precious years I was lucky enough to call her mine. These moments fill me with joy, sadness, pain, and love, often all at once. I wish she were here to witness my daughter’s beautiful growth and to see the incredible things happening with Femmes Sans Peur. I know she’s watching over us as my angel.
